Yes, that's a problem with the (DU3) sun ati video driver, it doesn't know all the chip versions/revisions used by ATI so it defaults to a "safe" maximum I've worked around this problem by patching the DU3 video driver module for the ATI video cards (/usr/openwin/server/modules/ddxSUNWati.so.1) in two places:

It always gets into safe mode fine, and the only thing I do to make it work in normal mode is disable the ati video card driver, not the actual card. When running off of the xp video driver it works (it is choppy but it works none the less). But the minute I enable the ATI video driver it freezes on boot up.
